During the winter we had different activities to promote girls cricket at grass roots level. Alexandra had their first internal league for the primary schools in their area. Alberton High School had a road show to introduce girls’ cricket at their school. To celebrate women month GCB had a girls KFC Mini cricket festival.
Alexandra Internal Girls League
This year for the first time we had internal league girls’ cricket for the primary school. We have 12 schools fixture in the league. This program is design to talent scout girls which we can earmark for our Gauteng junior provincial teams. The standard of cricket is good since they never played cricket and putting pads on for the first time they are so excited. The Alex coaches are also doing their coach during the matches and at time would see them on the field to help the girls alone. The semi-final and final will be played on Saturday 27 August 2011. This will be annual event in Alexandra to develop girls cricket to the highest level we can achieve for the area and eventually some of the players will go on to represent South Africa.
Road shows
GCB is doing road shows to market and develop the interest for girls’ cricket in the province. This innovative method will help us to grow the game from schools level to our club system. GCB development coaches assist with the coaching on these days which makes it easier to identify talent.
We had a road show at Alberton High School to introduce girls’ cricket. On the day we had 70 girls attending the road show, with the help of the Gauteng Development coach which assisted with the coaching they got right into the day. The girls’ enthusiasm to learn from the coaches was amazing to see and the skills levels were very high on the day.

The girls had a coaching session before they played matches on the day. We looking to have more of these festivals during the year but the one in the month of August will be annually. |
