The four-day Sunfoil Township Night Tournament culminated in an exciting finish as West Rand Hub dominated Easterns Invitational, winning the contest by a resounding six wickets. This annual tournament – run by Willowton Group in partnership with the Gauteng Cricket Board – was hosted by Delfos Cricket Club at Cecil Payne Stadium from Wednesday 4 to Saturday 7 April.
Shoaib Moosa, Willowton Group Chief Commercial Officer, congratulated each of the 120 players for a stellar performance and thanked the dedication of the 10 touring coaches and individuals who had worked hard to organise another successful tournament.
“There is a lot of planning that goes into an event of this magnitude, involving 10 teams from across the country for a three-day tournament, but it is all so worth it to see the joy experienced by these children as they take to the field,” said Moosa. “There has been some exceptional cricket played, friendships made and lessons learnt that will remain with these young contestants long after the tournament. We hope that this will be a positive base from which they can develop as young professionals, and we wish them every success for the future.”
The 2018 Sunfoil Township Night Tournament saw 10 teams – West Rand, Sedibeng, Alexandra, Soweto, Central and South regions, with three visiting teams from KwaZulu-Natal, Northerns and Easterns (including an U16 girls’ side) – compete in a T20 format in two pools. The competing teams were selected from overall results that emanated from the league cricket season.
The players enjoyed an opening ceremony held at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, Longroom on the first night, followed by three days of fun cricket action and the final game between West Rand and Easterns Invitational, played under floodlights on Saturday 7 April. Siyabulela Radebe, from the winning side, was named Bowler of the Tournament, Richard Seletswane of Westrand took the Batsman of the Tournament title and Louis Kemp of the Gauteng U16 girls’ team side was named Player of the Tournament.
Established by Willowton Group in 2007, the Sunfoil Township Cricket initiative served to provide a support base and financial input to allow talented youngsters to pursue cricketing options. The company has a long-term commitment to social upliftment and sustainable community development, with support for South African cricket extending all the way through to national level. In 2012, the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) partnered with Willowton Group on the township initiative and realised the unified passion for promoting township cricket by establishing the Sunfoil Township Night Tournament.
“Every season has been bigger and better than the previous years’, and this time wasn’t any different,” said Greg Fredericks, Chief Executive Officer for the Gauteng Cricket Board. “We would like to congratulate West Rand on their well-deserved achievement. They won every single one of their matches, showing dedication and raw talent with every game.”
Colin Gxowa, Cricket Service Manager of the Gauteng Cricket Board, said: “There has been great improvement reflected by the talent on display. This really pays homage to the programme as an inspirational grassroots’ initiative. There is so much enjoyment that comes with participating in a team sport which also gets them acquainted with the basics of the game - batting, bowling and fielding – but, above all, they get the chance to make lifelong friends.”
