Nono Pongolo struck a key half-century as Gauteng Strikers beat Easterns by 21 runs in a nail biting encounter at the Bidvest Wanderes Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The bizhub Highveld Lions all-rounder struck 50 (73 balls, 5 fours, 1 sixes) as Gauteng Strikers set Easterns 180-run victory target.
Gauteng Strikers made a stumbling start with early wicket losses of opener Yassar Cook (2) and captain Yaseen Vallie (0) to find themselves 10 for two. New cap Muhammed Mayet and Ryan Rickelton steadied the ship for Gauteng with a 39 run stand.
Ryan Rickelton was also a prominent figure for Gauteng Strikers during the course of the weekend most notably during the CSA 3 day competition with his 163 runs as the Gauteng side nearly achieved victory against Easterns as the match ended in a draw.
Gauteng Strikers’ innings took a turn for the worst as they found themselves 72/6. Pongolo made his way down to the crease striking the vital half-century to see off the Gauteng innings at 179/9.
On the bowling front, Nandre Burger was outstanding with the ball as he took 4 wickets for 29 while Chad Classen (3/36) was just as economical as the home side made strides. Tumelo Tlhokwe, the right-arm off break debutant from Soweto Cricket Club, chipped in with 2 wickets for 29 as the Gauteng Strikers bounced back for their first victory of the season.
