Gauteng Strikers triumph to double victory over Boland
The Sunfoil 3-Day Cup clash between Gauteng Strikers and Boland saw 20 wickets fall on day 1 and no matter how many runs are plundered, the result boiled down to the abilities of Ryan Rickelton’s 129 runs and Nandre Burger’s 5 wickets as Gauteng Strikers won by 154 runs at the University of Johannesburg Cricket Oval.
Day 1 served some testing batting conditions as both teams struggled against the moving ball which saw Boland bowl out Gauteng Strikers for a mere 149 runs with Ferisco Adams picking up a five wicket haul. Gauteng Strikers roared back bowling out Boland in the final session of day one for a 30 run first innings lead .
Thus enter Ryan Rickelton in his return to the Gauteng Strikers opening spot after a stint with the bizhub Highveld Lions smashed 129 runs in 166 balls which included 15 fours and a six in a fast-moving second day. He was ably supported by Shaylen Pillay who scored 71 runs not out as the Gauteng Strikers captain Izak Bergh declared on 306/6 setting Boland a mammoth 336 runs for victory
Gauteng Strikers bowlers then proceeded to rule the roost as Nandre Burger picked 5 wickets for 55 runs and Nono Pongolo chipped in with 3 wickets for 24 for the victory
Gauteng Strikers took the momentum into the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge in a nail biting 7 run victory. Rickelton and Pillay once again produced top performances with the bat scoring 60 and 63 respectively as Gauteng Strikers set Boland a target of 273/3 while Nono Pongolo produced the best bowling performance of the day with figures of 5/29 as Gauteng Strikers bowled out Boland for 266 runs placing them second in the group standing.
