We are slowly approaching the end of the season and what a season so far. Our HUBs & RPC have been going on with their normal schedule and looking to finish the season strong.
We had the honour and privilege to host the annual Coca Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week in December 2017. It was also an honour for us to have the participating teams play some of their games from the famous Soweto Cricket Oval, the same ground where the late legendary Bhut’ Khaya Majola played his last club cricket career game.
Our provincial U19 team did well and below are some of the top achievers during the tournament:
: Wandile Makwetu, Curtis Campher, Kgaudise Molefe, Jacob Miltz, Joshua Richards
: Michael Mahlaba, Emanuel Motswiri
The U17 team had a good week, but unfortunately they could not play the main game on the last day because of rain. Bryce Parsons, Johan Mulder, Linda Ndlovu and Lervert Manje had a good week and contributed positively towards the team doing well at the week. Bryce Parsons and Sahil Bramshaw were selected for the Lions Cubs team.
The U15 team was unbeaten at the cricket week and players like Tahir Isaacs, Heinrich Pieterse and Simo Potelwa were outstanding and contributed well with the bat. Thando Makwetu captained the team very well. All of our other teams did not have the desired results, but there were some moments of brilliance. We hope both the management and players have learned some valuable lessons and they will comeback as better cricketers in the future.
Sunfoil Township Night Tournament
In April this year we will be hosting our 7th
Sunfoil Township Tournament and we are looking forward to it. This tournament was designed to give our U13 HUB teams the opportunity to play night cricket under lights. This is with the aim to further develop our boys and girls by giving them realistic opportunities that mirror their heroes on television. Boys and girls get to play with a white ball, coloured clothingwith a good vibe around the field. Players like Kgaudise Molefe, Wandile Makwetu, Emanuel Motswiri, Mzikhona Buthelezi and Linda Ndlovu just to mention a few, have played in this event. This has now been a great platform for our selectors to spot some talent for our high performance during the winter months.
The team has had ups and downs during the 17/18 season. They are currently doing well in the white ball games and have not had the greatest season when it comes to red ball.
We congratulate our boys who have made the national academy intake for 2018.
- Nandre Burger
- Tshepang Dithole
We also congratulate our ladies who have made the intake for the women’s academy
- Palesa Mapoo
- Robyn Searle
We wish them all the best and may they go and absorb as much as possible in their quest to become better cricketers.
It will be amiss from me if I did not wish our “heart soul” Miss Buhle Vaphi well as she has been appointed as the Mass Participation Coordinator for Cricket South Africa. I know she will do great things and take the programme from good to great. You will be missed, however we know you will grace us with your presence once in a while.
As the GCB Cricket Service, we also welcome Mr Gary Moos and Miss Zanele Mthalane who have Joined the Charge
. We hope your stay with GCB is a good and healthy one.
